| Ewan MacKenzie & Kay Sullivan |
Ewan MacKenzie has been playing guitar for many years in all styles, and since devoting himself to the genre sometime ago has come to be regarded as one of Australia's finest Gypsy Jazz guitarists. His playing is fluid and passionate and he writes melodic, evocative material in the style. His soloing is warm and articulate while still retaining that spontaneity and creativity that is inherent in jazz improvisation.
Kay Sullivan thinks she may have been a gypsy accordionist in a previous incarnation, and after years playing at Bush Dances and country socials on the Darling Downs in Queensland where she has lived all her life, she has thrown herself into playing Gypsy Jazz accordion with a passion.
They met in September 2006 at a folk gathering at Mulgowie in Queensland, Ewan teaching Kay Nuages under a fig tree. A trip to Tamworth to busk and spread the Manouche gospel, late night jams at the National Folk Festival in Canberra and many recording sessions later, they've emerged clutching their first CD. Titled Paris Dreaming, it's a collection of Musette waltzes, Gypsy Swing, Django Reinhardt tunes and Ewan's originals.
